Bioplastic looks the same as plastic, so in venues where there is no information about the fact that the straw is from PLA, the customer will not know that the place is eco, or at least tries to be.
PLA is a material made of maize or sugar cane, so it is 100% natural, while its production burns as much energy as for the production of plastic. In addition, for it to be a biodegradable material, it should be composted (previously dry) what most restaurants do not know and throw the straws into the general bin. The regulations are not clear about the composting of the bioplastic and it usually lands on landfills where it decomposes … noone knows how long or it is burnt and goes to our lungs.
Despite the sincere eagerness, PLA straws are still garbage that do not save the environment in any way and drown in the oceans. Although they are a little better solution than plastic, we encourage you to use easily compostable straws or total resignation of them.
